What starts as one summer internship can shape the direction of an entire life.
For 35 years, Health Career Connection has helped students gain access to hands-on, educational experiences, mentorship, and professional opportunities that launch careers in healthcare, public health, primary care and behavioral health. Over the years, HCC alumni have become physicians, public health leaders, researchers, healthcare professionals, advocates, mentors, and even HCC board members.
This summer, a new generation of students is preparing to begin that same journey.
We invited three HCC alumni to reflect on how their internship experiences helped shape their personal and professional paths and why supporting the next generation matters so much to them today.
Shelby DeCosta and Oliver Chu: From Interns to Board Members
One of the most powerful things about HCC is seeing where the journey can lead. Over the years, we’ve watched students begin as interns and later return as mentors, leaders, supporters, and even board members.
In this video, HCC alumni and current board members Shelby DeCosta and Oliver Chu reflect on the long-term impact of HCC and why investing in the next generation of health leaders matters now more than ever.
Continuing with Oliver Chu’s Story
Oliver shares how HCC helped shape his path in healthcare leadership and the importance of creating opportunities for students who are ready to lead but need access and support to get there.
His story is a reminder that one opportunity can create a ripple effect that lasts for years.
Brian Ramirez’s Story
For many HCC alumni, it’s difficult to fully explain the impact one summer can have.
A mentor who believes in you.
An internship that opens doors.
The first time you truly see a future for yourself in healthcare.
In this video, Brian Ramirez reflects on how HCC gave him the confidence, clarity, and opportunity to fully commit to a career in public health and leadership.
If HCC played a role in your own journey, we hope you’ll consider giving back and helping create that same opportunity for someone else.
This campaign is not about giving a large amount. It’s about alumni coming together to make opportunities possible.
Give $35 in celebration of HCC’s 35th year, give $5, or give whatever feels meaningful to you. Every donor matters. Every gift helps.
Together, we can help launch the next generation of health leaders.
